ABOUT KIMBERLY

Kimberly Marshall holds the esteemed Patricia and Leonard Goldman Endowed Professorship in Organ at Arizona State University, a position she has held since May 2002. Her illustrious career is marked by a profound dedication to the art of organ performance, scholarly exploration, and innovative sound artistry.

Education and Diplomas:

Kimberly's academic journey began at University College, Oxford, where she pursued her D.Phil. in Music as a Marshall Scholar from 1982 to 1986. Prior to this, she earned her B.A. in French from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was honored as a Morehead Scholar. Her musical pursuits were complemented by tutorials at Duke University and private organ studies with Fenner Douglas. Additionally, she engaged in simultaneous study at the University of Montpellier and the Toulouse Conservatory, earning accolades such as the First Prize in organ with a unanimous jury decision.

Awards and Visiting Appointments:

Kimberly's contributions to the world of organ performance and scholarship have been recognized with prestigious awards and appointments. Notably, she received the Medal of the Royal College of Organists in 2022 for her distinguished achievements in organ performance and scholarship. Her expertise has also been sought internationally, with appointments such as the Hedda Andersson Visiting Professorship at the Malmö Academy of Music in Sweden and the role of Wainwright Eminent Scholar at the Florida State University College of Music.

Sound Meditations and Work as a Sound Artist:

Beyond traditional organ performances, Kimberly has delved into the realm of sound artistry, offering unique experiences through sound meditations and innovative presentations. Her work includes performances such as "The Bell and the Blackbird," a sonic and lighting interpretation of David Whyte's poem, and presentations like "Temporal and Timeless" at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. She has also contributed significantly to sound research and curated multimedia explorations, showcasing her versatility and creativity in the field.

Books and Editions:

Kimberly has made significant scholarly contributions through her writings and editorial work. Notable publications include The Organ in Recorded Sound: An Exploration of Timbre and Tempo and volumes on Renaissance and Late-Medieval organ music. She has also served as the General Editor for a series of articles about women organists, reflecting her commitment to promoting diversity in the field.
